Google has a video app called “Meet (original)”

Back in June, Google announced that it was integrating Duo with Meet in a migration currently underway. As part of that, Google’s first “Meet” app is now called “Meet (original)” with a different icon.

On Android, “Meet (original)” was formerly called “Meet” (and initially “Hangouts Meet”). The new name and green icon – somewhat in homage to the Hangouts era – introduced with release 2022.07.10 is a result of the company’s planning to use “Google Duo” as the basis for its latest video/voice messaging strategies. .

Duo is updated to get all the enterprise video calling features you associate with a Zoom or Microsoft Teams competitor. This includes:

However, Duo features like making calls via a phone number or email address, along with Google Assistant integration on devices like the Nest Hub Max, will remain.

The first stage of this transition is still being processed, but Google keeps the name “Duo” until all functionality has been moved.

Once this is complete, the “Google Duo” will be renamed to “Google Meet” and the “Meet (original)” should be gone. It should happen “later this year.” This process makes sense from a logistical point of view as Duo has over 5 billion downloads compared to Meet’s 100 million downloads. This app is mostly downloaded by enterprise users, who also have the option to use the Meet tab within the Gmail mobile apps.
